| Period before Dutch Colonization Era: |
Before the Dutch Colonization Taiwan, pirates always gathered in seas of the East Asia. Taiwan was in the important position of the ocean so pirates frequently stopped here.
In the western world, with "Finding the New World" in 15 century, Portugal and Spain came to East Asia. And Taiwan Strait is located at an important place for those European countries so they always strove for it. Portugal called Taiwan "Formosa". (means the beautiful land).
In East, Japanese pirates often snatched Taiwan's residents and in 1621, Yan Sichi and Cheng Chilong invaded most of the territory of south-west Taiwan.
Portugal, Spain and Dutch were the competitors for ocean trading. In 1602, the Dutch fought Spain for extending their business power in Luzon but failed. So the Dutch turned to fight with Portugal in Macau but still failed. In 1603, the Dutch dispatched two warships to invaded Penghu. Ming court sent Fuchien's officer—Hsu to defend Penghu and the Dutch was again expelled. Hereafter, the Dutch did not have a specific station in East Asia over than 10 years.
In 1622, the Dutch again offended Penghu and partial Chinese coastal areas by 17 warships and at that time, China was in an unstable situation for its interior political power, so Ming court avoided the conflict with the Dutch. Finally they got an agreement that the Dutch gave up Penghu and China allowed the Dutch to enter to Taiwan. The period of Dutch Colonization then began.
