In the mornings the excavation team moved into the excavation site and began removal of the bricks on the north eastern side of the castle. Afterwards a rain cover was built to ensure smooth excavations.
2003/8/12
In the morning the bricks on the north eastern side of the castle were removed and the excavations began. Today's excavation depth is about 20 cm, but many pottery and utensils fragments can be seen. However the date of the fragments was still to be determined.
2003/8/13
The trial excavations reached the depth of 10-40 cm and the soil was mainly greyish sand. The layer contains many fragments of red bricks, cements and the early porcelain fragments, hard pottery, glass and iron utensils. The porcelain fragments include An Ping pots and the later stage Blue and White Porcelain. This layer also contains many present day materials such as wires, pieces of plastic pipes, batteries and two coins dated 1974 and 1975.
2003/8/14
The excavations reach a depth of 30-50 cm, the unearthed material was about the same as yesterday, however, the age of the materials was close to the time of Japanese occupation and present day. At the depth of 50 cm, there appears to be large amounts of cement, rocks and piles of red bricks belonging to a secondary sedimentary layer.
2003/8/17
Under the layer of bricks appears a large amount of red bricks, the amount of hard pottery and porcelain fragments decreases greatly. The layer contains lots of fragmented shell remains and blocks of white ash and fragments.
2003/8/25
Granite blocks, coral reef blocks, sandstone, bricks and glass fragments can be seen. These materials were there probably due to artificial reasons.
2003/9/4
Underground water seeping in, as the water makes the sandy soil unstable it is not possible to continue excavating, thus the excavations came to a halt. |
